Q&A with Joe Peters

Want to know more about PetersTech, then read what founder Joe Peters has to say.

Not that it's very creative, but how did you come up with the name PetersTech?

Actually the full name is Peters Technology Services, and, yes, it is not a very flashy name. I considered some other names, but I wanted to be direct. So many technology products and services are more hype than substance. I think it is important for technology professionals to be clear. I also wanted to get my name out front -- to be as transparent as possible. I do the work and I stand behind it.

How did you get the idea for PetersTech

A lot of it gets down to fact that I enjoy solving problems, and let's face it, technology can present a lot of problems. Large companies can afford to hire the help they need. Small businesses and individuals don't have those resources, but for them, good technology can be more important. I've seen large organizations sink millions into bad decisions and then just walk away. Small businesses have to be a lot more responsible.

What is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional?

Besides being a mouthful to say, it's probably one of the most comprehensive technology certifications around. To become a CISSP you must pass a 250-question exam covering 10 broad areas of information security -- everything from physical security to cryptography. You also must have at least four years relevant experience. The ISC2, which administers the CISSP also continually reviews CISSPs and CISSP candidates to ensure they meet high ethical standards. The way I see it, there are a lot of certifications that say you know how to do something. The CISSP says not only do you know how to do a lot of those things, but you know how to do them securely.

How big is PetersTech

It's individually owned and operated. I do have some associates I call in for their expertise or for special projects, but most of the work is done by me. For the projects where I do bring in extra help, there's really only a handful of people I use. They're people I know very well and trust will do the job to a high standard.

One of your logos features a lighthouse. What's the significance of that?

Simple I like lighthouses. I even proposed to my wife in front of one. But there is some symbolism in that the technology landscape can be very difficult to see and dangerous. Whether it's a homeowner or business owner, often all someone needs is a little guidance. Good technology help is not fortune telling; it's problem solving. You have to focus on current resources and realities.

How would people find out more about you and PetersTech

Well someone once said to me if you really want to know someone, invite them to play a round of golf with you. As much as I would welcome that, my guess is most people would probably prefer to look through this Web site, contact us, or give me a call at 781-729-3045.
